These unpaid carers often have to cope with the complexity of balancing caring responsibilities with other aspects of life, including employment.

Situation in the UK

A closer look at the situation in the UK reveals a sad reality. Research shows that more than 14% of employed people also carry out unpaid caring activities. This dual role poses a significant challenge in balancing work and caring responsibilities. Shockingly, statistics show that two-thirds of unpaid carers in the UK have had to make sacrifices, such as cutting their hours or even leaving their jobs altogether, to accommodate their caring responsibilities.

State support for unpaid carers

Although governments are trying to address the needs of carers, the support provided often does not match the actual needs of carers. In the UK, for example, there is a carer’s allowance, but it is only GBP 81.9 per week – an amount that does not cover the financial burden on carers. Considering that the low income threshold in the UK is around GBP 1 500 per month, the carer’s allowance is not a large sum. The difference between the allowance and the actual cost of living shows a significant difference in support.

Carers need more support

At Atena, we believe that carers – whether employed or unpaid – deserve more support. Beyond the practical implications, there are deep moral reasons to advocate for increased aid. Carers play an indispensable role in society and provide invaluable support to their loved ones in difficult times. Recognising and appreciating their sacrifice is not just a matter of politics, but also a reflection of our shared values as a compassionate community.

Empowering carers with Atena

At Atena , we work hard to support carers on their journey in the best possible way.
