You can learn German for your job as a caregiver using the Atena Academy app. The course is designed exclusively for caregivers. It has five levels, from A1 to C1. You’ll receive a certificate after completing each level. You don’t have to study for three years. You don’t have to learn things you won’t use on the job. The course teaches exactly what a caregiver uses at work. It’s designed for working in Germany. You have the app on your phone. You can study at home, on the go, or after work. This article answers three questions: What will you learn? When can you start working? How does your salary increase?

Why was German a barrier?

Working as a caregiver in Germany is well-paid. However, many people haven’t been able to get such a job because they don’t speak German. The family needs the caregiver to be able to communicate with the senior. The family wants to be able to speak clearly with the caregiver. That’s why German is important when looking for a job. A standard language course takes a long time. It also teaches things you won’t use in a household setting. Many people don’t have time for such a course. Example: An elderly person says in German that they have a headache. A caregiver who doesn’t speak German won’t understand. She won’t be able to help them or call the family. German therefore remains a barrier to finding a good job.

What will you learn in the course?

This course teaches German for working in a German household. You’ll learn the phrases that a caregiver says and hears every day. The lessons are available in the app on your phone. You study whenever you have time. Example: At 7:00 a.m., you enter the senior’s home. You say, “Guten Morgen. Wie geht es Ihnen?” At 8:00 a.m., you ask what they’d like for breakfast. You understand them and respond with a single sentence. At 3:00 p.m., the senior wants to go for a walk. You ask them in German if they want to put on a jacket. At each level, you’ll learn a little more. You’ll start with simple sentences. Later, you’ll be able to handle longer conversations. You’ll use this German at work every day. The course doesn’t teach complicated things you don’t need at home. After each level, you’ll see what you’ve learned.

Can you start working after just two levels?

Yes. Levels A1 and A2 can already help you get a job in Germany. You’ll receive a certificate after each level. The certificate shows how much German you know. Example: You complete A1 and receive your first certificate. Then you complete A2 and receive your second certificate. The A2 certificate shows that you can understand simple sentences and respond to them. With these certificates, you can look for a job in Germany. You don’t have to complete all five levels to get started. You can complete the remaining levels later, once you’re already working.

What will change once you improve your German?

Better German means a better job. A caregiver’s salary increases with each higher level of German. Atena raised caregivers’ salaries in May 2026. Levels B1, B2, and C1 open up job opportunities with higher pay. Example: You’re working in Germany with an A2 level. While working, you complete the B1 level. With your new certificate, you can look for a job with a higher salary. A higher level also means greater confidence. You can understand seniors, family members, and doctors. Your salary doesn’t increase on its own. It’s increased by your new German language level and your new certificate.

How long does the course last, and how do you get started?

The course requires effort. You need to study regularly. What matters isn’t studying quickly, but studying every day. You can get ready in a few months. Every level you complete is a step toward a better job. Example: You study for half an hour in the evening after work. That way, you’ll take a small step forward every day. Each level comes with its own certificate, so you can see your progress. Download the Atena Academy app from Google Play: If you need advice, feel free to contact us.
