If you’ve ever heard of Jim Kwik, you’re probably familiar with the phrase, “The faster you learn, the faster you earn.” He is an expert in speed reading, memory improvement, and brain performance. We all want to improve and grow professionally. But not all of us want to spend hours reading, studying, or practicing, especially after a long day at work. The good news is that there are other ways you can learn – for example, by watching films.

Yes, you read that correctly! You can learn from films. Instead of spending your time watching a movie that doesn’t give anything to you, you can have fun and learn something new every day. Of course, you won’t get a Ph.D. from watching films, but it’s a great way to see what everyday life is like for someone with a diagnose.

Giving advice without examples is not very productive. That’s why we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite films that can also improve your skills and knowledge as a caregiver.

Father (2020)

The film is about a father who doesn’t want help from his daughter, even though he needs it because of his advancing dementia. In the film you can see in detail how a person suffering from dementia can start to lose his memory, stop recognising his relatives and even lose track of reality. And even if you’re not interested in the film because of the insights into dementia, it’s still a great film to watch. How could it not – after all, Anthony Hopkins is in it!

After she forgets a word during a lecture and gets lost on campus, she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. You can learn about the life of a person with Alzheimer’s disease and find out what their everyday problems are like while enjoying a great film at the same time.

The Untouchables (2011)

If you like movies based on a true story, this is the one for you! The story is about an aristocrat from Paris who has a paragliding accident and becomes a quadriplegic, all four of his limbs completely paralyzed. One of the candidates to be his caregiver is a young delinquent who somehow gets the job. Although the two men are from completely different worlds, they form a strong bond. From a professional point of view, it shows not only what life is like for a paralyzed person and their caregiver but also how important a personal connection can be.

If you’re not very interested in French films, the same story is told six years later in“The Upside“. This time, the stars are Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman. What’s more, Hollywood has make it to the perfection this time, which makes it even more fun to watch. The story of a quadriplegic and a man struggling to see his son somehow turned into a relatively easy-to-follow and incredibly entertaining film.
