Has your relative reached the age where they can no longer look after themselves? Do they have a diagnosis that prevents them from being self-sufficient? Whether we like it or not, it’s a normal part of life. Like most of us, you want to make sure your loved one is properly cared for. After some thoughts, you decide that 24-hour care is the best option.

It is very important to find the right person for the job. And since you’re probably not a human resources professional and don’t know many care assistants, it’s best to trust professionals and let them find the right person for your loved one’s needs.

Preparation

Of course, the caregivers don’t come to the household with all the necessary equipment and a mobile home to park right next to yours. That’s why you need to prepare your household for a new person. To simplify the process, we can divide it into two categories – preparation for the patient and preparation for the carer.

Preparing the home for the patient

It can be challenging at first, but when you break it down into smaller parts, it becomes much easier. To begin with, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your loved one mobile?

If the answer is not yes, you need to prepare the bed (arrange a lift or hoist or similar device). If there are stairs in the home, you should consider a ramp or stair lift. Don’t forget about the toilet and bathroom.

  • What diagnoses do they have?

If they have diabetes, the blood sugar will need to be measured daily. If they have hypertension, they will need frequent blood pressure measurements. Make sure you have all the necessary equipment for these tasks.

You don’t have to do it alone. It is best to see the patient’s doctor for two reasons – he can list all the diagnoses and give you information on what exactly you need in terms of equipment.

Preparing the home for the carer

If you look at it from a practical point of view, all that is needed is a bed, a wardrobe, a bathroom and a toilet. However, it is important to understand that comfort in the home is related to job performance. If the mattress on the bed is old or uncomfortable, the carer will not sleep comfortably. This means that he/she would be tired during the day and thus unproductive.

Besides, it’s not just about physical fitness. If the carer feels like at home in your house, they would care for your loved one as if they were their own family. Humans are social creatures and like to give and receive. Usually, however, it is a two-sided matter. If you want to receive, you should also give. In summary, when you provide the caregiver with better conditions in your home, you are indirectly looking after your loved one.
