When did people start looking for jobs abroad?

It is almost impossible to pinpoint the exact year when people started crossing the border in search of a better life. But if you think about it, people have been travelling abroad for work since there have been borders. For example, some of the first people to travel between countries for work were traders. And the reason they went to another country was not because they couldn’t sell their goods in their home country. It was because they got a better price for them and brought the desired goods on the way back. So they had seen an opportunity and they took it.

The evolution of travel in Europe

Border control in the EU was relatively lax before the First World War. After that, however, it was stricter. A visa was usually required to cross the border. After the end of the Second World War, customs unions between countries began to emerge. The Nordic countries were the first to allow free residence and movement between each other in 1954. Six years later, the Benelux countries followed suit. This started a trend of migration and most of Europe wanted to be part of something similar.

The final step, which mediated travel and work within Europe, came in the 1990s. 20 years. century. The European Union is created and the Schengen Agreement is signed. This meant not only free movement, but also EU-wide rules and regulations. Issues such as social security, health insurance, child benefits and so on have been resolved, even for people who commute daily to another country for work.

Why do people travel abroad for work?

The answer to this question may be completely different for each person who has decided to take this step. However, we can divide these reasons into three groups and summarise the most common reasons why people leave their home country.

  • Cognition – humans are, as a species, incredibly curious overall. For some of us, a two-week holiday during the summer may be more than enough time to satisfy our need to explore. On the other hand, many people want or need more. And the only way they can fund such adventures is to work in the places they go. After all, getting paid while exploring the world doesn’t sound bad.
  • A fresh start – many people do not feel comfortable in their own skin right where they are. If they have no responsibilities at home, they just need to find a job, pack their bags and simply move. It may seem scary and difficult to take such a big step, but with some preparation, nothing is impossible.
  • Opportunities – probably the most common reason. It can be an opportunity to learn a new language and expand your professional knowledge and skills. Or maybe you’re not lucky enough to have been born in a country where the average salary is more than €1,500. However, you are lucky that you are free to travel and explore all the possibilities.
